The first thousand days, with the families.
A five-year programme so that children in Yepocapa grow up in a safe, protective and stimulating environment, with families, schools and the health centre. Piloted in 2025, it starts in full in 2026.
What a child needs to start well
- Health: check-ups, vaccines, care at the clinic and the health centre
- Nutrition: growth monitoring and family support
- Early learning opportunities
- Responsive caregiving: how mothers, fathers and carers respond
- Safety and protection at home and in the community
Why
Community work in recent years showed how vulnerable children growing up in unequal settings are, above all in the first years. The programme rests on the WHO Nurturing Care Framework and Guatemala's public policy on integral early childhood development.
How
Modular design: each component has activities with their own impact, presented to funders separately and combined. Every activity includes the child, the family and the community.
Measuring from day one
In 2026 the research centre of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of San Carlos evaluates the activities' impact and defines which continue from the second year.
Four projects approved for 2026 (Junta de Castilla y León and Italian regions) fund the health, nutrition and capacity-building components of the first year.
