The Rekko 8 team with arms raised
About

One piece of work, from Italy to Guatemala.

Rekko is an independent, non-political, non-religious association founded in Italy in 1985 and present in Guatemala since 1994. It runs two primary-care clinics, the Escuelita Gian Carlo Noris and a scholarship programme in Sacatepéquez and Chimaltenango, always alongside the public system. It is sustained by its patients and by friends in Italy and Spain.

What does not change
  • IndependentNo political or religious affiliation since 1985. We work with every institution that serves the same people.
  • ComplementaryWe support the public system where it does not reach; we never replace it. Agreements with the Ministries of Health and Education.
  • SustainablePatients pay a token fee (those who cannot are exempt) that covers most of the clinics’ running costs. The rest, and education, is sustained by sponsors, foundations and friends.
  • Dignity firstNobody is the product. We publish no portraits of children and no stories of deprivation; we report programmes and results.

Our roots

A group of friends, and today many more people.

Rekko began in Italy with Gian Carlo Noris and a group of friends. Gian Carlo led the association from its first projects in Burundi and Tanzania to the opening of the clinics and the school in Guatemala, until his death in Antigua in 2012. The Escuelita bears his name.

Today Rekko is the work of many people: the Guatemalan team, volunteers, and supporters in Italy and Spain. His son and grandson are still among the volunteers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rekko a religious or political NGO?

No. Rekko has been independent, non-political and non-religious since its foundation in Italy in 1985. It works with Guatemala's Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and with public and private foundations in Spain and Italy.

What is the link between Rekko and "Amici di Rekko 7"?

No formal one. Amici di Rekko 7 (Ravenna) is an independent association of former volunteers with its own projects; it is not part of Rekko and does not raise funds for Rekko. We are grateful for its occasional support to works in Guatemala, but gifts to Rekko go only to the three associations on this page.

Why three associations?

Because each country requires its own entity for tax-deductible gifts and grants. Rekko Guatemala delivers; Rekko Ibérica and Rekko ETS raise funds and submit projects. All three keep separate accounts.

Where are the statutes and accounts?

Annual reports are under Results. Audited accounts and statutes are provided on request while their publication on this page is completed.

Can I visit the projects?

Yes, with some notice. Write to comunicacion@rekko.org and we arrange the visit with the team in Guatemala.
